Grounding: What is it?

It is a system of electrical safety measures designed to prevent people from getting electrocuted from faulty circuits. To further understand this concept, let us define what is a circuit. 

A “circuit” is basically the pathway of electricity moving “current” through a conductor “wires” starting from a source “transformer” to supply electricity to all appliances “loads” then returns to its original source, thus a complete circuit.

If the electrical system is disturbed or damaged “ground fault”, for instance, an electrical insulation is gnawed by a pesky rodent, the wire is disabled and the current will not follow the intended pathway “circuit” and will naturally follow the path of least resistance like the metal casings of appliances. The metal casings of appliances then become part of the circuit and electrical current will flow on its surface which makes it dangerous to humans if touched. If touched, you will complete the circuit unless you are wearing non-conductive materials on your feet.

The grounding wire provides a means of path for the excess current which is attached to the metal casings of appliances. These wires are typically bare copper which are naturally good conductors and have less resistance as compared to metal casings so if an appliance is “grounded” meaning it has grounding wires, excess current will flow through the ground wire back to the source and will trip your circuit breaker, cutting the circuit. 

Why Should You Practice Proper Grounding?

Practicing proper grounding is a must to ensure complete safety on all electrical circuits. In fact, removing the grounding system from other circuits will not affect the circuit from its processes but increases the risk of you being electrocuted so it is mandatory and even prescribed by law to install grounding system in all households.
